Proposal for Painted Palms (the sweeper) April 2012 Gouache on inkjet print 10" x 6.5" In 1946 the military conducted nuclear weapons tests off the Bikini Islands, this program was known as Operation Crossroads. The tests consisted of setting off nuclear bombs beneath ships to document the bombs' explosive power. As part of the documentation the islands' palm trees were painted with black-and -white stripes. The ships that were not sunk in these test were brought back to the Hunter's Point Shipyard for decontamination. By painting strips on the Shipyard's palm trees I acknowledge the Shipyard's nuclear past.
