The Paint Chip Series is comprised of Benjamin Moore paint chips trimmed to 1 x 2 inches. Each paint chip has two hole-punch circles punched through the chip. Reading from top to bottom, each hole is filled with the previous color on the left and the next color on the right. The process of reading the chips is related to reading text in a sentence or paragraph. The first piece in the Paint Chip Series Ebony King, Blushing Bride is a 100 page narrative with one paint chip per page. The narrative is composed of the names of the paint colors found on the chips. The choice of paint chips is entirely based on the paint names and not on the colors of the chips. This process creates a chance operation where color juxtapitions cannot be anticipated, however because the text’s emotive quality there may be unintended relationships between colors.
