Assemblage for Rats May 2012 Mixed mediums 84”x 36” x 36” An Assemblage for Rats originally began as a piece called Rat Rod. In hot rod culture a “rat rod” is hot rod that celebrates a rustic look rather than the highly painted and chromed finish of most hot rods. Both pieces were created around a rusted piece of steel. An Assemblage for Rats is something of homage to both Bruce Conner and his piece “Rat Bastard” and Ed Roth and graphic image “Rat Fink”. Ed Roth was one of the most creative of hot rodders, as I worked on this piece I realized the one of Roth’s early rods “Outlaw” was an “anthropomorphic” version of his Rat Fink image. I was also interested in rats in culture: we don’t want to observe such a common animal the way we might with birds.
