September, 2011 Photographs, trap, wire, and paint on wood 20 x 15 x 2 inches
For There But . . . I took a series of photographs following San Francisco Bay's incoming tide at Yosemite Slough until the tide covered my feet. The site of the photographs is used by people who use shopping carts to hold and burn insulation off copper wire and other electronics, the metal is then sold for scrap. As a result of all the burned material the area is highly polluted. I removed two shopping carts from the area to create the installation "New Newgate" . I began to feel a bit sorry for the people who had to steal shopping carts and wire to make a living. I realized that after I took the shopping carts they would simply steal others (which they did). As someone who has struggled financially at times it was not hard to envision myself in their shoes. The materials used in There But... I consider the materials of despair.
